Fishing S.C. with Mr. Dunlap

Fishing S.C. with Mr. Dunlap

This picture was taken around 1974 at the sandy shore of a lake in South Carolina. I am standing with my friend's father, a native Texan with the wonderful name of Jordan Clarence, and if you look really close you can see a tiny catfish suspended from my fishing line. This was my first time fishing ever, and I've not gone fishing since.

But see? I caught a fish, albeit a rather small one. Don't worry: I threw him back right after my friend snapped the photo with her plastic Instamatic.

But I can still remember the excitement of that little tug on the line, the challenge, the focus, the victory. It didn't take much to delight me then. I told everyone forever after that I'd once caught a fish.

And as you can see, it's true.
