Uncertainty

Yesterday's rain revived us, and morning fog has hidden us, and the day has been a secret space to quietly inhabit.I'm settling into a decision I've made, and trying to muster up courage. My friend Dan sent me this wise quote from Helen Keller: “Security is mostly a superstition…It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humans as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure of nothing.”

Recently I heard an "On Being" interview with Rebecca Solnit, and she said, among other things, that despite how much we all crave certainty, hope is really an acceptance of uncertainty.

Solnit also reminds us that we cannot always see what greater forces are at work, and that time frames may be longer than we'd like, but outcomes are unpredictable, and we never know what amazing change will come about, and what obstacle might turn out to be a tremendous force in our life. I'm thinking that this is applicable to personal life, and to the political and global landscape as well.

I am gathering strength and faith, and I'm drinking in as much love and beauty and friendship as I can. I can't see what is out there, but I'm going to navigate as though good outcomes are possible, on all fronts.
